Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging and Debris Flow in Narayanbagar, Chamoli
Intense rainfall caused seasonal streams to overflow in Narayanbagar, sending water and debris into parts of the market and affecting traffic along the Simli-Almora National Highway.
Chamoli, Uttarakhand: Heavy rainfall disrupted normal activities in Narayanbagar on Monday evening after seasonal streams near the market began carrying a large volume of water and debris. The sudden flow affected commercial areas and created difficult conditions for residents and shopkeepers.
The intense spell of rain reportedly started at around 7:30 pm and continued for approximately an hour. As water levels rose rapidly, parts of the market experienced waterlogging, prompting people in the area to take precautionary measures.
Water Enters Shops in Market Area
Water flowing from the surrounding seasonal channels reached parts of the market, with several shops reportedly affected. The movement of rainwater and debris toward commercial areas raised concerns among local traders and residents.
Shopkeepers and residents took steps to protect their belongings. Vehicles parked in the market were also moved to safer locations to reduce the risk of damage.
Mud and Debris Affect Highway Movement
The heavy rainfall also resulted in mud and debris accumulating near Jeet Singh Market and around the hospital area along the Simli-Almora National Highway.
The debris affected traffic movement and made travelling through the area more difficult. The combination of heavy rain, flowing water and loose material on the road created additional risks for motorists.
JCB Machines Deployed for Debris Removal
Officials assessed the situation after the rainfall-related disruption. Border Roads Organisation personnel arranged machinery to clear debris from affected stretches and help reopen the road for regular movement.
The clearance operation was aimed at removing obstructions from the highway and nearby affected areas as quickly as possible.
Residents Advised to Remain Alert
Heavy rainfall can cause sudden increases in water flow through seasonal streams and drains in Uttarakhand's mountainous regions. Residents and travellers are therefore advised to exercise caution around overflowing channels, unstable slopes and debris-prone roads during periods of intense rain.
Authorities are continuing to keep watch on weather-related conditions in the region, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and debris movement.
